About Katie
I am currently a sophomore at the University of Michigan, studying psychology. However, I recently applied to the School of Education to obtain a teaching certificate upon graduation. If I get accepted into the Teacher Certification program, I will change my major to English (as much as I love psychology, it's not exactly the most marketable teaching major).
Regardless of whether or not I get accepted into the teaching program, I'd like to apply to Teach For America or a similar program upon graduation. Teach for America would allow me to be placed in an urban classroom anywhere in the United States for two years- it would be an incredible challenge that I'd love to take-on. I realize that this program is very competitive, though, so who knows what the future has in store for me?
Outside of school, I like to keep myself busy with several activities. At school, I work for the University of Michigan Educational Theatre Company, a rental company that puts on productions for various U of M departments and organizations. I am also involved with the Michigan Performance Outreach Workshop, a student-run organization that exposes elementary schoolers from Detroit to the performing arts. The activity that I'm most involved with is the Michigan Association of Student Councils and Honor Societies (yeah, it's a mouthful). My role in the organization is to serve as a mentor for high school students, volunteering throughout the year at various conferences and events, including our Summer Camp, where I work as a Junior Counselor. It's the most fun I've ever had, and have met some of the best friends in the world at these conferences / events.
I love traveling- it's one of my absolute favorite things in the world (pun intended). After traveling with some classmates to Italy and Greece in 2008, I've wanted to go back to Europe and truly experience it for more than a week or two. I hope to do a bunch of traveling while I'm abroad so I can see other parts of Europe as well!
I will be studying abroad for the Winter 2012 semester, and this website is where you'll be able to check-in to see what I'm doing! If you love me, you'll bookmark this page and visit it frequently. If you really love me, you'll subscribe to this page to receive e-mail updates when I post entries :D If you're reading any of my posts, please comment on them! I'd love to hear from you while I'm gone
